Finland’s and Europe’s role in the global energy transition
Leading energy industry players, decision-makers and tech representatives will convene at the Tampere Exhibition and Sports Centre in Finland from 23–25 October for Energia 2018, the most comprehensive professional energy industry event of the year in Finland. The event kicks off with Finnish Energy Day organised by the World Energy Council Finland together with the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, during which experts from both public and private sectors will seek solutions to the most acute challenges facing the energy sector in light of the most recent climate report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
WEC Finland’s Energy Day will take place on 23 October at Energia 2018 in Tampere, Finland.
“The energy sector is no longer defined by national borders but is instead increasingly global. To ensure the quality of both national and international decision-making, there is a need for continuously revised, reliable and science-based research data, as well as an enlightened public debate with a plethora of voices,” says Helena Kivi-Koskinen, Executive Director of WEC Finland.
EU energy targets and IEA recommendations for Finland
What can be done in Finland and on the European level in the coming years and decades to combat global climate change, which researchers are describing as a turning point in human history? Gerassimos Thomas, Deputy Director-General for Energy at the European Commission, will deliver the keynote speech on Finnish Energy Day, 23 October. Thomas will discuss the topic of Energy Transition, assessing these global challenges and opportunities from the EU perspective. This topic will then be further discussed by a panel of business leaders from Fingrid, Fortum, Valmet, Wärtsilä and the electric utility company Tampereen sähkölaitos.
Later in the afternoon on Finnish Energy Day, the International Energy Agency (IEA) will publish its country report for Finland. Paul Simons, Deputy Executive Director of the IEA, will present the report and recommendations for Finland, and Kimmo Tiilikainen, Minister of the Environment, Energy and Housing, will have an opportunity to comment on them. The panel discussion on the topic will be moderated by Rami Vuola, Chairman of the Board of WEC Finland, and the panel members will include representatives of the Finnish Energy Industries, the Finnish Climate Panel, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi), the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation and the Finnish Climate Leadership Coalition.
Active consumers play a key role in smart cities
Energia 2018 continues on 24 October with the Energy Congress, the topics of which are the energy markets, smart cities, energy projects, and energy and digitilisation. The congress will seek answers to topical issues, such as the transformation of the electricity markets and the future of combined heat and power generation in Finland. The situation regarding tenders for renewable energy production subsidies will also be clarified, as will the impact of wind power on the Nordic energy markets.
The latest energy solutions by innovative cities will also be discussed along with the role of active consumers in smart city environments, buildings as virtual power plants, the digitalisation of energy and industry, and cybersecurity within the energy sector. In addition, the most interesting energy projects in Finland will be presented, from the country’s largest solar energy park to small modular nuclear reactors.
Comprehensive presentation of practical energy solutions and change management
Energia 2018 promises to offer a comprehensive presentation of practical energy solutions and change management, as well as future opportunities, over four days, beginning with Finnish Bioenergy Day at Tampere Hall on Monday 22 October. The Energia 2018 exhibition will take place in Hall A and Hall E at Tampere Hall from Tuesday 23 to Thursday 25 October. Hall A will present industrial energy production and power plant systems, machinery and equipment, and services. Hall E will present the latest solutions for energy efficiency in buildings, renewables, clean energy and the circular economy, including smart energy technologies.
The keynote speeches, mini-seminars and panel discussions will take place on the Energia 360 main stage in Hall E. The topics on Tuesday 23 October will focus on energy efficiency in industry, real estate and transportation. On Tuesday afternoon, a panel organised by the Finnish Clean Energy Association will discuss the ambitious targets for reducing traffic emissions. The main themes on Wednesday 24 October are the circular economy and sustainable urban planning. A mini-seminar will explore the topic of smart and clean heat and how the energy transition will transform district heating.
The focus of attention on Thursday 25 October will be the latest innovations and energy technologies. A panel organised by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland will discuss the innovation ability of companies in the Finnish energy sector in the face of international competition. Also on Thursday, Business Finland, the Finnish Fair Foundation and WEC Finland will jointly present the Start Up Award to the winner as voted by members of the public.
On the final day, Friday 26 October, futurologist Risto Linturi will deliver the keynote speech entitled “Radical technologies in the 2020s: a revolution in energy production and consumption”. The programme on Friday also includes three other talks by leading experts.
Admission to the Energia 2018 at Tampere Hall is free of charge for registered visitors.
